Living On Our Food Storage-Day 6

"The revelation to store food may be as essential to our temporal salvation today as boarding the ark was to the people in the days of Noah."
-President Ezra Taft Benson

We are actually doing really well. This morning we had omelets. I was trying to use up the lunch meat before it goes bad. I sautéed frozen chopped onion and bell peppers that I had stored when they went on sale a while back. So Ivan and I had omelets supreme. Of course, the kids wanted theirs without the good stuff.

Later on in the morning, Liz and I headed to a free cooking class given by King Author's Flour Company. It was really good. I learned a couple things that I didn't know before. I keep my jarred yeast in the frig, but I learned that my yeast packets/envelopes should be stored in the freezer. If you store them in your pantry, they tend to loose their ability to raise. The lady actually had some great bread making tips. Plus, they gave Lizzie and I both a $10 gift card to use on their website. Yeah!

After the class, we headed to meet up with Ivan, our 3 other kids, 2 friends of Ivan's from work, and Jen Mouso and her boys to go to Chipotle. Chipotle was offering a free burrito, taco, salad, or bowl to anyone who was wearing red between 2 & 4 p.m. today. We got there while the line was still inside the building. When we left, the line was wrapped all the way down the side walk. Glad we got there early. It was so hard not to order the chips and salsa or the guacamole, but we were not going to pay to eat out while we are trying to survive on our food. We saw Sister Cherry there also, she's doing the same challenge. Great minds think alike!

After that I did run to Albertsons. I can't pass up 6 free bags of chex mix and salad dressing for $1 with my coupons. I also stopped by Fry's to use my coupons on the Pace Salsa which made each 16 oz jar 50 cents. I came home and put everything in my office closet, so we won't be touching it for another 8 days! I was down to 2 or 3 jars of salsa in my pantry. With the 12 jars purchased today, I probably have almost a 9 month supply.

My last entry includes my lists of what I am glad I had and what I wish I had stocked up on. I keep updating my list on almost a daily basis! I hope it helps someone else! We're down to 4+ gallons of milk and 3+ dozen eggs, so we are doing well there. Good luck to the rest of those trying to live on their food storage. The nice part has been the realization that we could actually make it for a fairly substantial amount of time if there was ever such an emergency. I see why the scriptures say that if ye are prepared, ye shall not fear! (D&C 38:30)

What an excellent experiment! Darin and I should try that out. If we had to start today we wouldn't be eating very well. I need to rethink what I've got in the cupboards.

You are amazing with your storage. I am still in shock at how much milk and eggs you had on hand. Way to go!

I'm the food storage lady in our ward. This is such a great challenge. I've heard of it being done in other wards and it seems like it would be successful in ours.:) We'll have to see... I LOVE reading your updates on this. We'll have to try it too to find out what we should add. This is great! I'll have to keep checking your blog for updates.

I'm so impressed with how well you are doing! You are an inspiration!

We drove by Chipotle on Saturday around 3:00 and it was NUTS! The line was wrapped around the building. There was NOTHING that could get me to wait in that line. I'm glad you got there before it got too crazy!

Keep the food storage tips coming...
